What you say vs. What you do

October 26, 2007 · 2 Comments

I recently saw this video about Fox News:

It begs a question that I feel relates to brands and organizations and that is: what says the most about you? Your communication or your behavior? The internal memos along with the reports that hit the Fox News airwaves have a stark difference from the “Fair & Balanced” tagline. So, where do consumers take their cues about your company or organization? Do they simply listen and blindly believe what they are told or do they look elsewhere to evaluate your actions and values to better understand the type of company you are? I believe what I learned in grade school still rings true, “actions speak louder than words,” and I would suggest before spending millions of dollars on a new tagline or :30 spot companies should take a good hard look inside and make sure they are living up to any promises they want to make before they make them. Otherwise all that time, effort and money will have been spent in vain.

Why?

October 26, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Why now? It is October of 2007 and I am finally starting my own blog. I missed the meteoric rise of the blogosphere by a good two years. Well, to tell the truth I don’t have a great answer for that, except to say that before I was busy, and now I am still busy but thought if I didn’t do it now it may never happen. One of my favorite quotes is from the movie Vanilla Sky where Penélope Cruz’s character Sofía Serrano turns to Tom Cruise’s character David Aames and says:

“Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around”

So, I am seizing this minute and taking the opportunity to begin my blog. Hopefully it will not be filling the web with more overly pretentious rhetoric, just some simple thoughts and ideas this southern boy can muster.
